Chapter 164: Meeting the Mother-in-Law!
"Chen Feng!"
On the other end of the phone, Fang Yue’s pretty face instantly flushed crimson. She let out a reproachful cry, not expecting Chen Feng to speak so uninhibitedly. Yet, beneath the shyness, a trace of sweet warmth blossomed in her heart.
Women caught in the throes of love are mostly alike, always easily gladdened by the slightest sign of care from their beloved.
"Alright, alright, I know now. I'll get a gift ready and come right over!" Chen Feng smiled gently into the phone at Fang Yue. "Wait for me! Mwah!"
A faint blush crept across Fang Yue's cheeks before she hung up.
Huu!
Chen Feng put down his phone and looked at Lu Ran. "Xiaoran, I can't teach you how to drift today. Well, just do as I said. Make sure you don't rush to leak my news. You can negotiate with them, but don't expose me. We'll talk about it after some time has passed!"
Lu Ran nodded, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "Brother Feng, have a safe trip!"
Chen Feng offered a slight smile, then quickly strode to the garage. He casually hopped into an Audi A6 and drove out of the estate. Nowadays, Chen Feng's family had come into wealth; naturally, it was time to buy luxury cars and live in grand mansions. It wasn't about being an upstart lacking refinement, but rather that once one's economic capacity reached a certain level, the elevation of one's material standard followed quite naturally.
While driving, Chen Feng stopped by a store to pick up some casual gifts. It was his first time visiting Fang Yue's home, and he honestly had no idea what to buy.
However, he did know that Fang Yue came from a single-parent household. Although Fang Yue had always claimed she had both a mother and a father, through deeper conversations later on, Chen Feng learned that Fang Yue's father had passed away in an accident when she was in middle school, leaving her mother to raise her all alone.
Fang Yue's home was undoubtedly much better than Chen Feng's former residence. It was an eighty-square-meter apartment; though a bit run-down, it had a history of over a decade.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
Chen Feng took a deep breath, then raised his hand to gently rap on the door. It was opened by Fang Yue. The moment she saw Chen Feng, she grabbed his wrist and pulled him straight inside. Chen Feng steadied himself slightly—this was his first time visiting Fang Yue's home.
He had to admit that while the exterior looked rather shabby, the interior layout was exceptionally cozy. It was easy to tell that Fang Yue's mother was a woman who took great pride in cleanliness.
"Mom, this is my boyfriend, Chen Feng!" Fang Yue pulled Chen Feng over to a woman who looked to be in her forties, speaking with a hint of nervousness. "Chen Feng, this is my mom!"
"Hello, Auntie!" Chen Feng greeted Fang's mother very politely. Fang's mother still retained a distinct charm, and her skin was exceptionally well-maintained.
As Chen Feng sized up Fang's mother, she was doing the same to him. Truth be told, Chen Feng's first impression was remarkably favorable. After losing weight, Chen Feng stood at one meter eighty-eight centimeters tall. Having been through a series of trials and tribulations, he carried an air of distinction and possessed the aura of a true man.
"Xiaohua—ah, Xiaofeng, come, please sit!" Fang's mother didn't deliberately make things difficult for him. When she first learned that her daughter was dating Chen Feng, she had been utterly shocked and initially intended to put a strict stop to it. However, the events that followed had deeply astonished her.
Chen Feng had actually mobilized the influence of the Lu family directly to secure Fang Yue's admission to Donghai University.
Though Fang's mother was just an ordinary citizen, she was well aware of what kind of conglomerate the Lu family was. To be able to make the CEO of such a massive corporation assist Chen Feng—this fellow named Chen Feng was evidently no ordinary person.
Yet, upon deeper understanding, Fang's mother grew even more amazed. Chen Feng was fundamentally an ordinary person, and just a few months prior, he had still been a terribly heavy young man.
Looking at Chen Feng now, Fang's mother pondered for a moment before turning to Fang Yue. "Yueyue, there's fruit in the kitchen. Could you be a dear and wash it, then bring it out?"
"Okay!" Fang Yue hesitated slightly. She understood that her mother wanted a private conversation with Chen Feng. For a moment, a wave of nervousness fluttered in her chest. She quickly walked toward the kitchen, casting one last lingering, deep look back at Chen Feng.
"Xiaofeng," Fang's mother said leisurely, looking straight at him. "I don't know when the two of you started getting involved, but what I want to tell you is that I only have this one daughter, you understand?"
"I understand, Auntie. Please rest assured, I will definitely protect Yueyue well!" Chen Feng replied with an earnest expression. "I could never let her down for the kindness she showed me."
"Kindness?" Fang's mother looked at him with slight surprise, asking curiously, "What kindness?"
Chen Feng let out a soft sigh and slowly began, "This is a kindness that perhaps even Yueyue herself isn't aware of. Auntie, you see... there was a period of time when I was extremely, incredibly fat. I remember—I remember when I was just an obese, bloated figure, I felt like I was absolute trash. I didn't know what I was capable of, living day in and day out in a daze. Do you know? It was Yueyue who made me understand the meaning of living!"
At this point, Chen Feng smiled faintly. "It sounds ridiculous to say, but we were classmates, and then we happened to walk the same path home every night. Back then, she was just a young girl walking home from school alone, always worried, always frightened, and so she would constantly trail behind me. I knew about it, I knew all along. At that moment, I suddenly realized that I wasn't entirely useless after all. I thought, at least I'm of some use to someone! Truly, I should thank Yueyue. She was the one who made me realize I still had some worth."
Fang's mother fell silent. In her heart, she could feel the profound sincerity in Chen Feng's words, entirely devoid of pretense or falsehood. In the kitchen, where the tap water was running loudly, Fang Yue also pricked up her ears, a sentiment known as being moved blossoming in her heart.
Even though the kitchen faucet was gushing noisily, Fang Yue had received the Super Soldier Serum, so her hearing allowed her to catch the conversation between the two of them quite clearly.
To think that her own inadvertent actions had kept a young boy from sinking into total despair.
"Auntie, I know your concerns. You're afraid that since I have money now, Fang Yue might not be a match for me, and you're afraid I might wrong her. But I beg you to safely entrust your daughter to me. I genuinely hope to walk the path of life together with Fang Yue, and I ask for your blessing." Chen Feng spoke with utmost earnestness.
Fang's mother took a deep breath, looked at Chen Feng, and said, "Chen Feng, thank you for your honesty. However, I do have a few conditions I need to discuss with you."
"Please go ahead, Auntie!" Chen Feng smiled as he looked at her.
Fang's mother paused to ponder for a moment before looking at Chen Feng with a serious expression. "You and Fang Yue are still too young. I allow you to date, but the premise is that your studies must remain your top priority!"
"Please rest assured, Auntie, I will definitely not distract Yueyue from her studies!" Chen Feng replied sincerely.
Actually, whether she studied earnestly or not hardly mattered anymore. Even if Fang Yue approached studying purely as play, her academic performance would likely be exceptionally stellar. Having been injected with the Super Soldier Serum, her brain had undergone development, pushing her intelligence to a terrifying degree. No matter how casually she studied, mastering anything would be effortless for her.
"Secondly, while I'm not a particularly traditional person, I'm not very fond of this modern casualness among you young people. At least until Fang Yue turns twenty-four, the two of you are not allowed to cross that line!" At this, a faint blush touched Fang's mother's cheeks, and she continued, "Can you agree to this?"
Chen Feng naturally understood what Fang's mother meant. A slight smile surfaced on his face as he replied, "Auntie, I can agree to both of your requests!"
He certainly wouldn't mind enjoying some intimacy, but if he failed to break through to the Xiantian realm, he wouldn't be able to share a bed with Xiao Yu anyway, and sleeping with other women would also impact his progress. Besides, once he reached the Xiantian realm, wouldn't that solve everything? Furthermore, even if they did cross the line, could Fang's mother possibly tell just by looking?
Seeing Chen Feng readily agree to everything, Fang's mother found herself with nothing more to say. At that moment, Fang Yue returned, carrying a fruit platter over to Chen Feng. Seeing the two of them chatting so harmoniously, she smiled and asked, "Mom, Chen Feng, what were you two talking about?"
"Nothing much!" Chen Feng smiled lightly, picked up an apple, and said, "I was just discussing with Auntie about how we should handle things when we go to Donghai."
Knock! Knock! Knock!
Just then, another series of knocks sounded at the door. Fang Yue stood up and said, "I'll get it!"
She walked over to the front door and pulled it open. At the sight of the person standing outside, she froze, her voice carrying a note of surprise. "It's you!"
"Hehe!" The fellow outside let out a chuckle, and before Fang Yue could react, he squeezed right past her into the apartment, his gaze immediately locking onto Fang's mother. "Hey Fang, I've come to see you. How have you been lately?"
"It's you!" Fang's mother recognized the man instantly. Her face turned icy cold as she demanded, "What are you doing here?"
"Hey Fang, that's no way to talk. No matter what, we're relatives! Is there something wrong with me coming to see you?" The man flashed a cheeky grin, his eyes roaming wantlessly over Fang's mother's figure before adding, "What, still single?"
"That's none of your business!" Fang's mother said coldly. "You can leave now."
Chen Feng's gaze landed on the man. For some reason, he felt that this fellow looked rather familiar, as if he had seen him somewhere before.
