Chapter Fifty-Seven: Arriving in Time
"Brat! I told you to sign your name and leave your fingerprint! Are you deaf?" Seeing Qin Anyi dare to shake his head in disagreement, the captain immediately shouted with displeasure. "This is a statement, but unfortunately, it's not mine, so I refuse to sign it," Qin Anyi continued to shake his head. "Damn it! If I say it's your statement, then it's yours! You did it, so why are you afraid to admit it now? Do you even call yourself a man?" The captain slammed the table again, brandishing his baton, seemingly intent on continuing to beat Qin Anyi. But this time, the baton did not land on him; instead, Qin Anyi easily caught it.
"I think there's no need to continue this questioning. Your interrogation is obviously biased, and the process is filled with violence. Under these circumstances, I have the right to remain silent and to ensure my personal safety." Qin Anyi stood up, his expression icy cold. "I want to make a phone call. According to international legal conventions, I should be allowed to contact a lawyer."
The captain was momentarily stunned, then burst out laughing. "Hahaha, did I hear that right? A lawyer? Kid... have you gotten too used to school? Sure, we want to align with international standards, but we still have to follow our own laws... A lawyer? Hahahaha!"
"And you actually dared to grab my baton with your hand. Don't you know this thing is electrified?" After a few laughs, the captain looked at Qin Anyi with mockery and suddenly turned on the electric current. Instantly, Qin Anyi's body went numb... This kind of current could incapacitate an ordinary adult in a flash, even with Qin Anyi's physique.
In this system, the role of a lawyer in the entire trial and sentencing process is almost negligible. However, the judicial system requires at least the appearance of fairness and justice, so the profession of lawyer must exist. Yet existence is all it is—without enough background and status, no one cares about a mere lawyer, because in the end, they have no influence whatsoever on the verdict of any case...
So when the bespectacled man suddenly questioned him so loudly, Director Wang felt quite displeased, though he was well aware of his subordinate's habits. Having his weak spot exposed directly, he couldn't say much. He shot the captain a fierce glare, then forced a smile and said, "You two talk first. As for the specifics, we can't draw conclusions so casually. Maybe those injuries were just accidents. And as for other matters, the procedures aren't complete yet, so it's too early to say. But at least until the truth comes out, he remains the prime suspect, and he can't leave the station, since we have the victim's identification!"
After finishing, Director Wang gave the bespectacled man no chance to respond, and led several police officers out of the interrogation room, leaving Wei Dong and the lawyer alone with Qin Anyi.
Director Wang, like the captain, was closely connected to Wang Shi. He knew perfectly well why this incident had happened. Yet the captain's public beating of the suspect, only to be caught in the act, made him lose face. So after leaving the interrogation room, Director Wang snorted heavily, waved away two police officers, and said irritably, "Liu! What's going on with you? Everything was arranged from the start, you just needed to get him to sign the statement and leave his fingerprint. Why did you have to cause trouble and hit him?"
"Chief... I... I just lost my temper because of him. You didn't see the way he acted, like he was the center of the universe. I couldn't hold back and went a bit too far. Who knew we'd be caught at just that moment? Who are those two, anyway? Does this kid have some kind of background?" Captain Liu bent low, fawning and cautious, aware that he'd just embarrassed his superior, so he quickly changed the subject.
"Background? Nothing important, just ignore it. In any case, don't complicate things further. Get the statement settled—if he refuses to sign, we can still proceed with prosecution based on established facts. It's a small matter, don't make a scene out of it," Director Wang snorted coldly again, then added, "Keep an eye on the time in there—when it's up, have everyone come out, and temporarily detain that kid until all the evidence is ready and we can go directly to public prosecution. The sooner this is over, the sooner we can relax."
"Yes, yes, don't worry, Chief. I'll handle it," Captain Liu kept bowing until Director Wang left, then he finally straightened up, spat to the side, cursed his luck under his breath, and stood obediently outside the interrogation room to wait.
