As Qin Anyi listened, he silently committed all of this to memory. Since he had resolved to pursue Wang Yiran, it was obvious that the higher his standing within the Dragon Riders, the better. His parents had always been right about one thing: for those truly at the pinnacle of society, a marriage of equals would always be the decisive factor. Clearly, this could be achieved by rising within the ranks of the Dragon Riders.

“By the way, Yi Qiu is now a staff sergeant,” Wang Yiran added with a note of annoyance. “Since becoming an official Dragon Rider, he’s already completed three consecutive missions flawlessly. He’s expected to become the youngest second lieutenant in the history of the Dragon Riders by the end of this year.”

“How many Dragon Riders are there in total?” Qin Anyi suddenly asked.

Wang Yiran was momentarily taken aback. She blinked, pursed her lips, and replied, “That’s a state secret. If it weren’t for my father’s position, I wouldn’t be privy to it either. All I can tell you is that, due to various restrictions, the number of Dragon Riders is never large—never more than four figures.” She held up four fingers, then continued, “However, the entire department that serves the Dragon Riders is twenty times larger than the number of official Riders themselves! And every single one of them is an elite. In short, once you become a full Dragon Rider, you’ll instantly join the tiny fraction of society standing at the very summit. You’ll enjoy privileges and status that ordinary people can’t even imagine. But at the same time, you’ll bear the nation’s most perilous responsibilities.”

“When will I be asked to take the test to become a full Dragon Rider?”

“The official test is held twice a year, at the beginning and end of the year. This year, since no trainees met the testing requirements in the first session, there will only be one test—at year’s end. So your test will be three months from now.” Wang Yiran smiled mysteriously. “Also, since you’re someone I discovered and recommended, if you actually become a full Dragon Rider, the department’s evaluation of me will rise as well. As your rank and contributions increase, my standing will continue to improve too.”

“If someone wants to be your boyfriend, what rank does he need to reach at minimum?” Qin Anyi asked suddenly.

Wang Yiran stared at him in disbelief. “Are you serious?”

Qin Anyi nodded. “Everyone has ignorant dreams. Most people’s misfortune is that their dreams remain forever out of reach. My luck is that mine still has a chance of coming true.”

“But this path will make your future incredibly difficult. One misstep and you could be destroyed.” Wang Yiran lowered her head slightly, hiding her expression from Qin Anyi. “I know you like me very much, but I don’t want you to take such risks for my sake. Some people are destined from birth to be separated by a lifetime of distance. If you’re unwilling to accept this, I can agree to be your girlfriend for a while, but it’s unlikely to end well. Though I don’t want to obey my family and follow through with that arranged marriage, I still have to respect their wishes when it comes to the final choice.”

“A life full of challenges and obstacles is what makes it interesting. It’s like a heartbeat—if everything’s smooth and flat, it means you’re already dead. I haven’t even tried yet—how can you know I have no chance? Miracles exist to be created.”

Qin Anyi smiled confidently as he spoke.

“Fine. If you want to be with me openly, without my family’s opposition, then at the very least, you’ll have to become a general among the Dragon Riders.”
