Chapter Eighty-Six: A Crushing Victory

Just as Wang Chenggang was full of doubt and anticipation, Qin Anyi had already finished the second problem with effortless fluency and, without the slightest pause, lowered his pen to begin writing beneath the third.
By then, in Class Two of the senior year, everyone had shifted their attention to Qin Anyi’s blackboard, except for Yan Tao, who still stood alone before his own board, head bent in grim concentration, struggling through the calculations.
After those few minutes of checking, the students had all realized that Qin Anyi’s answer to the first problem was unquestionably correct, and that his method was maddeningly simple. So when they saw him swiftly solve the second problem as well, their first reaction was to hurry and check his working steps.
Yet this problem, which they had found so difficult, had already been solved by Qin Anyi in an instant.
What on earth was going on? What kind of mind did this person have?
Staring blankly as Qin Anyi completed the solution to the third problem in one continuous flow and wrote every step in full across the blackboard, the students of Class Two in their senior year had all become somewhat numb.
They merely followed the steps on the board and did a bit of mental arithmetic, and immediately confirmed that Qin Anyi’s answers were indeed without error.
This was not because their own mental calculation was so remarkable, but because Qin Anyi’s method was written with such plain clarity that even a fool could understand it at a glance, with absolutely no technical complexity whatsoever.
But these students were not idiots. They understood very well what it meant when complexity was reduced to simplicity.
Thus, after Qin Anyi finished writing out the solution steps for all three problems and turned around, the gaze of those who only minutes ago had been jeering at him was now filled with awe.
Such a choice was understandable enough, but it did not suit Yan Tao’s desire to display himself.
“No, Yan Tao, I think you’ve misunderstood. Qin Anyi has already solved all three problems, so I called an end to the contest,” Wang Chenggang said with a sigh.
“What? Qin Anyi solved all three problems? That’s impossible!”
Yan Tao blurted it out in shock, only to realize that Wang Chenggang’s expression held no trace of amusement.
He subconsciously looked toward the other students seated below the platform, only to find that their expressions directed at him actually carried a hint of sympathy.
Sympathy?
What in the world?
Yan Tao suddenly whipped around, his gaze finally locking onto Qin Anyi’s blackboard, and the moment it focused, he could no longer tear it away.
He really solved them all?
And in the time it took me to solve just one?
More than that...
Why were the steps so simple?
Yan Tao swallowed hard. His breathing gradually grew heavier, and he widened his eyes in an effort to find a flaw in those simple steps.
But after a full few minutes, having gone over the steps Qin Anyi had written on the board three times in all, he still could not find even the smallest mistake.
The steps were just too simple. Simple to the point that if there were an error, it would surely stand out at once.
Which meant...
Qin Anyi had really solved them all?
Staring blankly at Qin Anyi, Yan Tao’s mind could not, no matter what, condense such a conclusion. It was simply too overturning.
“Qin Anyi finished all three problems in a total of ten minutes. Yan Tao solved one. By quantity, Qin Anyi wins. And all three of Qin Anyi’s answers are correct, so by quality, Qin Anyi also wins. This contest goes to Qin Anyi. Any objections?”
Wang Chenggang swept his eyes over the students of Class Two in their senior year and announced loudly.
Objections? With the result so obvious, what objections could there be?
They had only not expected Qin Anyi to be this formidable...
“Impossible! I don’t believe it! There must be something wrong! How could this be? Three problems, finished in ten minutes? Absolutely impossible! Teacher Wang, did Qin Anyi see these three problems before?”
Yan Tao’s entire head began to buzz, and then he shouted at the top of his voice.
Wang Chenggang’s face immediately darkened. Such a question was no different from accusing him of helping Qin Anyi cheat.
For a teacher, this was a tremendous insult.
